This semester my favorite novel was Wuthering Heights. I always heard the Brontë sisters referenced in other classes, but I hadn’t read any of their works prior to this course. I surprisingly really enjoyed Wuthering Heights because of the writing style. It was a bit difficult initially, but it was so different from most other novels that the complexity was quite interesting. There were also many different adaptations to serve as points of comparison, so the text was fairly diverse as source material. (I was particularly intrigued by the way the Lawrence Olivier film adapted the story.)
My least favorite text from the semester was Oliver Twist. I definitely think Dickens is a crucial aspect of the course, but I just had a hard time finding the novel interesting (relative to the others we read). With this said, I still think it was important to read Oliver Twist and it is beneficial in terms of further familiarity with Dickens as a writer. I just personally could not interest myself in the novel. If I had any suggestion, it would be to keep A Boy Called Twist as one of the films for the semester- while I didn’t enjoy the novel, I thought the adaptation was well done and brought some diversity to the Dickens unit. Otherwise, I enjoyed the other novels/films from the course.
